loveliness 59

Here we are... posing for da pictures and doing goofy face reversing.
It is great to have a sister... really one of the very best things. Good luck with your move, sis...

Also lovely? being surprised about the things you miss:

I'm all caught up!

loveliness 58

From the loveliness archives: Friday, Feb 20!

It is nice to think about other 365 day projects sometimes. This one was actually the project that inspired the 365 lovelinesses.  But my sister's 365 day project was The Original one in my memory. A self portrait every day, in ink on paper, and collected in a bookwork at the end of the year. It is ambitious and beautiful, and I feel lucky to have a copy (I also feel lucky to have a sister, but that is the topic of a different post...).

It was especially nice to talk with Sara about this project (over sushi at the one and only Sushi Yama), and compare notes about these types of daily practice projects. The two most memorable things were:
- not to worry about repeating things. Sometimes stuff is the same, and it just continues to be that good
- not to worry about the travel entries being different, or weird. That is what travel is, after all. Here are some sample entries from her travels, drawing the eye cavity, looking out:

On that note, the main source of the abundant loveliness of this day was still revisiting old places and memories and tastes (food memories are some of the very best kind). Also, walking 20+ km was pretty satisfying too.

AND THIS HOUSE!!!! I have always loved this house, I have no idea why:

merci P for taking the picture....

On a cold, minus 10 kind of day,  it is nice to plan a vegetable garden....
This year we'll try: chard, butternut squash, mesclin mix, hot peppers, runner beans and kale.

Ahhhh..... other people's photos. Especially Patrick's photos. So nice! So much nicer than mine. Witness:
look at this amazing, soft and mysterious photo. Now look at the junk that came out of my camera:

It makes me happy, though, that there is skill involved in photography. And it is good to keep someone with skill around, to manufacture beautiful pictures.... to manufacture lovelinesses for me (I guess I'm cheating!).

loveliness 57

According to my notes, Thursday's lovelinesses were:
-  revisiting old themes (a repeated lovely, see lovelinesses 56 and 58)
- changing your mind about soup. I think this is more precisely about remembering how I changed my mind about soup. I remembered that on Thursday, mm hmm.
- catching up with old friends, especially in situations involving confusion about grapefruits vs. grapefruit juice and also in situations involving soup or stew.
- cameras in tupperware!
- at the risk of sounding stuff-white-people-like-y, improvements to transit (yes sky train to the hairport)/other city's transit

Also: visits to the Yaohan Centre in ditchmond, source of strange candies and Japanese pattern books.

(Thanks to wikipedia for the image)

Looking back on trip photos is nice. It is surprising what you take pictures of, though. OK, it is surprising to me what I take photos of. I thought this hedge was funnie:

Now: I'm overwhelmed by the task of back-lovelinessing.

Sunday: from the flight home...

Flying at night can be kind of wicked. If it is clear, you can see the stars pretty well, and the lights below are fairly spectacular too.

loveliness 61

No cavities!!! This is truly a source of excitement. Or at least, satisfaction.

Wednesday: ferried over to Vancouver and spent the rest of the day retracing steps, rewalking walks, revisiting memorable spots and places lived. Highly enjoyable.

We have also been lucky with some fantastic sunny days... I love the looooong Northern light.

loveliness 55

Oh, I'm behind on my lovelinessesess.

Tuesday: Annie Pootoogook's drawings at the art gallery of Victoria were pure loveliness. Made me want to pull out the old pencil crayons.

How can I not drink too much coffee here? Too delicious: organic, "air roasted" (?), locally roasted... Serious Coffee I love you. Also, quiet dog and child free moments, but also children and dogs.

Flowers in February. I mean, flowers growing from the ground.

Just getting there is great. Also drinking beer in the airport while waiting waiting waiting.

Today was all about that satisfying feeling of crossing things off the to-do list.

Now I can cross off  "BLOG" too.

I'm not quite sure what is going to happen over the next nine days, as P and I head to Victoria and Vancouver. But I will try very hard (probably with the help of pinger's fancy phone) to post something every day. I'm sure there will be no shortage of lovelinesses. Just in case... here are a few random things that surprised me when they came off the camera:

Remember when it rained, on Wednesday night?

And here is a nice little window display, on Dundas:

Finally, a self-portrait on Roncesvalles (thanks for the walk, mom!):

Wow! Fifty lovelinesses! 13.69% of lovelinesses are in the past!

Compliments from strangers are nice. Well, only if you are positive that they aren't hitting on you. Which I was this morning when I had a really nice chat with a stranger on the subway, and everyone knows that random chats on the ttc are seldom lovely. It started because she complimented me on my green coat, but then the conversation turned to Orfus road shopping, how to be a good aunt, and how to talk to a too-beautiful 13 - going on 18 - year old girl about dressing appropriately.  Interesting way to start the day, anyway.

This drawing from the trial of Omar Khadr kind-of blew my mind. His case is not at all lovely, which is perhaps why this picture is so striking, because it is. I think the idea of drawing as a record is very interesting, partly because there is so much variation and subtlety possible. And yet despite all of the stylization (is that a word?), there is so much accuracy and even truth that can be captured. This comes up in court and medical illustration, but also in war art. I was totally blown away by Richard Johnson's drawings from Kandahar, which were on at the textile museum for a while.

Do you read your spam? I don't know how these people do it, but they are poets really.

"Nice prices for quality time spendings."

"C'est top secret." (for some reason I get a lot of mails from French online casinos).

"Occupied by emma von der tann. Barney hastened bombs crashed
oftener than ever, and sometimes no matter. It is, i dare
say, of no great importance. Of observation of most human
beings. The birthmark hear that foolish lecture. I suppose
i want control."

I think at some point I promised to shut up about the mennos, but I can't help myself today. This just cracks me right up:

In truth there are about a badillion lovelinesses I could write about today: beautiful and amazing friends, brownies in tin foil, babies in various stages of existence, polka dot maternity dresses, women in general, talking, on and on and on.....

Depth of field.... I love it and I miss it. Here are some portraits of kale taken with a borrowed camera:

Hey! It's Friday night dinner time, and I'm assembling all the ingredients. I'm making a vegan white bean and leek cassoulet with biscuits.  I hope it'll be good. It probably won't be unless I actually go make it.

Later: no, it wasn't really very good. But getting together all the stuff was the loveliness. That is the best part, sometimes. And, friday night dinner after an unusually normal week wasn't so bad either. Ahhhh.......

Surprise day trip!!!!

Pingram (on couch): sick as a dog
Ross: ectomorph caregiver

A nice hint of a sunset in Kitchener though... the tiny dots on the left are people playing hockey in the park!

So far this is an ill-formed loveliness, so let me get right to it: he is on the mend!

Sun rise: 7:32 AM
Sun set: 17:33 PM

Have you noticed that the days are getting longer! Yes? This is one of my favorite things -- when the length of the days sneaks up on you until suddenly it is more awesome than it was before. I love love love it!
Even though it is still winter (and will be for a while longer, according to Wiarton Willie), I'm looking forward to more brightness and lightness and snow-shiney days...

Today I took the last seat on the 196 York Bus (it is a "rocket", actually) on the way to school.  Usually there is something wrong with the last seat, today it was that the two adjacent seats featured overflowers. In fairness though it isn't hard to overflow those little seats in the winter, what with the poofiness of everyone's parkas. But anyway, I wedged myself in there without really realizing what I was doing, and at first it was really uncomfortable because there was so much touching involved.  But then:
a) I noticed that the guy to my right was reading a report on how mindfulness can help with skin clearing and psoriasis. It featured charts and graphs. The guy to my left was playing a fairly mindblowing circular version of pong on his iPod.
b) I noticed how warm I was....
b') and how full of Jnet's delicious quiche I was....
and so I dozed off.... highly cozy in a weird public sort of way.

drawing 2

Monday is drawing day... which means I look back at the week and realize that I only did a few crappy scribbles while watching The Wire....

loveliness 40

I have been singing that song, "back to life, back to reality" (ree AL ih tee) all day. It was nice to be back up at York though, there were little yellow signs all over the place that said "Welcome Back" in a cursive-type font. And there were plates of cookies too!

One super nice thing was to go back to the Steacie science library. I picked up a book that I had been looking for: "Graphs, surfaces and homology." Usually I hate books that were typeset before the wonder of LaTeX, but this one is actually pretty special. Here is only a selection of the awesome hand drawn illustrations:

Returning to the "back to reality" theme, here is a write-up of the strike that I think is interesting. For one thing, the photos that accompany the article are awesome, I wish that I had that type of skillez (although they are blasted in the comments: "the campus doesn't look like an old sewage plant EVERYWHERE") . In general I haven't found the Torontoist's coverage of the York strike to be very good, mainly because their cooler-than-thou attitude really comes out in full force when faced with some of the union's activist antics. But this article points out the significant losses that all parties suffered in this dispute: York took a massive hit to their reputation, the students lost and lost and lost, and of course the technical losers, our own CUPE members.... whose losses are and will continue to be substantial and humiliating.

Roxy also enjoyed herself....
